  • How quickly do book pages fade on StoryWalks©?

    Our StoryWalk© Signs are UV-Resistant meaning your book pages won’t fade as fast! Making it possible to cycle through several children’s books without having to cut up new ones.

    Our signs are made with UV Inhibited acrylic that will keep your design from fading over time. Learn more here!

    Most StoryWalk© Signs unfortunately fade over time after about a month.

  • How to make a StoryWalk©?

    1: Decide where you will put your StoryWalk©

    2: Decide what signs you will use. Some people make permanent StoryWalk signs and some people prefer a temporary option.

    3: Get funding for your project. You can partner with local companies, parks, or organizations.

    4: Set up your signs and find books to put in them. Use your own if you are a public library or buy premade ones to fit in your panel.

    Optional Step: Many libraries like to have activity prompts around the pages to prompt deeper immersion in the StoryWalk.

  • How much does a StoryWalk© cost?

    It depends! Permanent StoryWalk signs are a little more expensive and can range $300-$800 a panel.

    Our Read & Walk Sign is between $649-$715 depending on the quantity you need. Keep in mind, our signs have a 10 year color fast guarantee! We like to be very transparent with our pricing.

    A temporary one can be DIYed and only cost about $100 per sign.

  • How to take apart a book for StoryWalk?

    You will need about 2-3 copies of the book since you 'll need to post the front and back of every page.

    You will open up the book and cut the pages off with an exacto knife. Once you have all the book pages lined up, tape them together.

    Most StoryWalk© Signs require lamination but our Read and Walk Sign does not. It is fully waterproof and uv resistant.

  • Is StoryWalk© copyrighted?

    The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier Vermont. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

  • How far apart do I space the StoryWalk?

    That depends on the length of the route and number of panels available. Make sure that the readers know where to find the following page, it is best if the next page can be seen. About 100 feet would be a good distance. A half-mile trial works well for small children.

  • How to pay for a StoryWalk?

    There are several ways to fund a StoryWalk©. Most common methods include grants, sponsorships, or partnering with your local park or nature center.

    Our StoryWalk© Sign is fully customizable meaning you can put corporate sponsorship logos on the sign!

    Depending on a permanent or tempory StoryWalk© project, the costs will vary.

  • Where can I get books for my StoryWalk?

    Most libraries buy 2-3 copies of the book they want to include on their StoryWalk© trial.

    But some people also sell premade copies! Lark Signs now sells pre-formatted StoryWalk© books that fit not only our Read & Walk panels but many other standard StoryWalk signs as well!

  • What are copyright laws for StoryWalks?

    The books can not be altered in any way, the pages can not be scanned or reproduced, only mount them on card stock and laminate each individual page. Purchasing new books and not taking donations or buying used books helps the writers and illustrators get full benefit.

    Most parents plan to buy the book after seeing it in a StoryWalk©.

    A Storybook Walk™ is a creative way to engage children in reading while they move outdoors or indoors! Pages from a children’s book are displayed along a path, wall, or fence.

  • What are Prompts I can use on our StoryWalk Sign?

    Activity Prompts:
    - How many bugs can you find?
    - Jump up and down three times

    Literacy Prompts:
    - Who are the characters?
    - How do you think the story will end?
    - What is the character thinking?

    Discussion Prompts:
    - How is this character similar to you?
    - How would you solve this problem?

  • Where can I set up a StoryWalk©?

    Most people set up StoryWalks at a local park, public library, or at a nature center.

    Some public schools have set up StoryWalks along a playground to showcase students artwork, poetry, or short stories.

  • How long should I keep books on display?

    Books are not meant to stay on display for more than a month or two. The sun can fade book pages fast making them hard to read. Plus, changing out the book often keeps people wanting to come back!

  • How is the Read & Walk different from other StoryWalk signs?

    Our Read & Walk StoryWalk© sign is waterproof, UV-resistant, and easy to change in an out.

  • Where can I get books for a Story Book Trail??

    There are many options for getting books for your StoryWalk trail!

    Option 1:
    Buy 2-3 copies of a book, cut it up and laminate it. But keep in mind, lamination isn’t necessary for our Read & Walk as it is fully waterproof!

    Option 2:
    If you purchase our Read & Walk StoryWalk© Sign, then you can buy books directly from our StoryWalk© book shop! They are pre-formatted to fit in our panels or any 11” x 17” window!

    Option 3:
    Buy preformatted books from storybookwalk.com or from other sources. They usually come available in sizes 11”x17” or 18”x24”

  • Do I need to design my own StoryWalk panel?

    NO! We designed several Read & Walk templates that we can easily customize with your information. Just browse our StoryWalk© panel gallery and pick which one you like!
